The JC Whitney Story In 1915, just seven years after the first mass produced Model T, Israel Warshawsky opened a scrap metal yard, The Warshawsky Company, in Chicago to sell replacement parts he had mined from derelict automobiles. When the demand for parts outstripped the supply, he began buying up failed auto manufacturers. And to welcome more customers, he opened a retail store and added new parts to his inventory. Roy Warshawsky, Israel's son, joined the company in 1934. He proposed that the Warshawsky wholesale catalog, which had been distributed only in Chicago, become a consumer catalog serving the entire country. An ad in Popular Mechanics inviting readers to send in 25 cents for a "giant auto parts catalog" received a flood of responses and the JC Whitney catalog was on its way to becoming the do-it-yourselfer's "bible". Roy assumed leadership of the company in 1943. During the war and post-war years, business boomed and the catalog grew. To meet increased demand, a series of specialty catalogs targeted to key market segments was introduced. Like his father, Roy developed new strategies to respond to changing customer needs. When he saw a need for specific products, he contracted manufacturers to produce them. He worked tirelessly to make it easier for consumers to purchase independent aftermarket products.
